     The town of Palmer Lake CO homes is bringing the star to Plamer Lakes’s Sundance Mountains again for the 2008 Christmas season. This giant 500 foot, 5 point star has been shining brightly since 1935. The mountains slope is 60 degrees and there are 91 special 40 watt bulbs that bring the Christmas star to life.

     The Palmer Lake Historical Society has been keeping tabs on the tradition since the beginning. During the summer of 1935, America was in the Great Depression. Mr B.E. Jack of Mountain Utilities Company came up with the idea and shared it with Bert Sloan owner of Sloan’s Cafe in Palmer Lake. Word spread quickly throughout the town and community leaders and town residents all joined in help plan and design the star.

     Back then, they dug post holes and rigging wire with surplus parts donated by the utiility company. Even Bert Sloan’s dog Dizzy helped out. This German shepard wore a pack and would haul tools and parts to the workers. After three months of full time work, the star was lit and has been shining brightly every year since.

     Fort Carson, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo are working together to bring back the black-footed ferret to the prairie lands of Fort Carson real estate. Back in the 1980’s, there were only 18 ferrets left in this Colorado Springs CO home area. Now they have been on North America’s most endangered mammeal list since 1967.

     The ferrets habitat has been destroyed by poisoning of the prairie dogs by farmers and introducing the plague to the ferrets colonies. The zoo will provide the animals that are to be released and are hoping to do this in the fall. It is unknown how many will be reintroduced.

     Colorado Springs single family home building permits plummented to the lowest monthly total in 17 years. There were only 55 issued by the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department in November. This is a 52 percent drop from one year ago. The total single family permits issued for all of 2008 is only 1,180, a 42% decrease from one year ago. Permits for condos and townhomes also fell 50%. This is the lowest amount since Febrauary 1991.

     On the other hand, building  apartment complexes doubled in 2008, with 358 units. Colorado Springs commercial construction, which includes hotels, office, manufacturing, and retail, is up 18% from one year ago to $431 million dollars spent. Commercial additions and alterations is up 9% to $224 million dollars.

     Excitement is in the air with the announcement of LOWES starting construction on their new building at Citadel Crossing in Colorado Springs CO real estate. The company closed on the land deal along the S Academy Blvd corridor last week and expects to open the store in February of 2010.

     Nearby store owners and businesses are happy to see a big name store go in there. They are hoping this will jump start the area and attract other commercial business to relocate there since other stores went over to the Powers area. There will be 120 job openings available when the store opens. Most of them will be full time. Hobby Town and The Picture Show Theater feel their business will only increase with Lowes bringing in new customers.

     Demolition will begin immediately  on the former Kmars store and part of the old Best Buy store. Construction is slated for the summer of 2009. The store will have 103,000 square feet and another 31,000 square feet for a garden center. That is 12% smaller than their ususal store size. They will stock 32,000 items, down from the usual amount of 40,000 items. They will also offer 500,000 items from special order. Lowes is trying to open smaller stores with less items in order to increase efficiency and cut capital outlay costs.
