History
As communities, these towns are relative latecomers, established on former ranch land near Fort Carson. Robert M. and Robert K. Willis, Leon Snyder and E.W. Hayes formed the Security Development Co. in 1954 and built 65 homes on the former F & M Jersey Ranch. Local legend says the first two streets were named Easy Street and Security Boulevard after Robert M. Willis’ wife said it would be wonderful to live on Easy Street in Security.
A stage stop and fort, built in 1860, stood on a site 2 miles north of Fountain that a century later became known as Widefield. Settlers from the surrounding farms and ranches went to the fort for protection from the Indians, although the fort was never attacked. Widefield, named after one of the original school districts organized in 1874, was developed in the 1960’s by Jules Watson, a former commercial pilot.
