Monument Colorado boasts a small town atmosphere even though is it located only 20 minutes from Colorado Springs. It has a population of around 2,000 residents. There are biking and hiking trails around the town and many restaurants to enjoy. In town, there are older homes built in the 1960’s. Outside of town, most of the building only started in the 1990’s. Some houses are located on 2-5 acre land parcels. Prices range from the mid $100’s and go up to over $1 million dollars.
Each year there is a huge 4th of July parade that is attended by hundreds. Anyone can march in the parade and afterwards there is plenty of food, shopping booths, and music for everyone to enjoy.

School District 38 Information
“The Lewis School” of Lewis Consolidated School District #5 was the original Monument School and was founded August 20, 1874. School was held in several one-room schoolhouses and served only 1st through 8th grades. High school students were not added until 1917. In 1920, “The Lewis School” was constructed at 146 Jefferson Street, in downtown Monument, and was named for Inez Johnson Lewis. She was a teacher at the Palmer Lake School, became county superintendent of schools, and was instrumental in consolidating three small school districts in order to be able to provide high school grades in the Monument area. This school became a central meeting place for community functions. Currently, the building houses the district administration offices. The gymnasium was added to this school in 1935, and a cafeteria was added in the early 1950s.
In 1921, the Inez Johnson Lewis School had one graduate, Bernice Ingersoll. In 1922, the high school was accredited. Donald McKay, who was the district’s superintendent as well as principal and math teacher, was credited with helping to get the high school accredited. The school used gas lights because there was no electricity in Monument at the time. To be accredited, the school had to have electricity, and Mr. McKay was instrumental in getting electricity to the school.

On July 28, 1948, Palmer Lake School District #33 and Lewis Consolidated School District #5 of Monument voted to consolidate. At this election, it was decided to give the new district a new number by adding 33 and 5. Thus, the district became #38 and was renamed “The Lewis-Palmer Consolidated Schools.”
In 1957, a new high school was built at 66 Jefferson Street in Monument (the current site of Grace Best Elementary). It continued to serve as the district’s high school until 1980, when the newly constructed high school was opened at 1300 Higby Road in South Woodmoor. In 1980, the old high school (now GBES) became the middle school. Lewis-Palmer Middle School was located at the GBES site until 1994, when the new middle school opened at 1776 Woodmoor Drive. That is still the site for Lewis-Palmer Middle School. In 1995, after considerable remodeling and renovation, Grace Best Elementary opened in the old high school and middle school facility at 66 Jefferson Street in Monument as the district’s fourth elementary school.
In 1973, Lewis-Palmer Elementary School opened as a middle school for grades 4-8.
In 1988, Kilmer Elementary School opened to accommodate the growth in the eastern part of the district. Kilmer currently serves approximately 350-400 students. In 1994, a new facility for Lewis-Palmer Middle School was completed and opened for students in Woodmoor.
In 1996, the Lewis-Palmer Charter Academy opened as a charter school in District 38. It began serving preschool through 9th grade students. In 2000, the name of the school was changed to the Monument Academy. Their current enrollment is 430 students, with approximately 150 students of that total coming from outside District 38 boundaries.
In 1999, a $23 million bond election was passed to build the two newest schools in the district. Prairie Winds Elementary in the King’s Deer subdivision and Creekside Middle School in the Jackson Creek subdivision were built and opened for students for the 2001-2002 school year. This provided additional classroom space at each elementary school and provided the district two middle schools with plenty of room for student growth at that level.
